2022 Rise Nero D'Avola Pet Nat

by Blood Moon Wines View producer profile

I thought Nero d'Avola would be a great candidate for a Pet Nat Rose as it naturally has such high levels of acidity, so if picked early enough it would be nice and crunchy as this affects the freshness of the wine and the flavours too.

These grapes came from the Chalmers Merbein vineyard. The soil type is a red clay loam - quite different to their Heathcote site - so the fruit grown here is not necessarily going to make complex wine but I am hoping for purity of primary flavours.

The fruit that came in was pristine and I had a good feeling about this wine.

To me, it has echoes of a light Blanc de Noir, especially on the nose. It's soft, delicious and fresh now but I think it will develop in interesting ways over the next few years too.

- Matt Aulich, Winemaker

Vineyard - Chalmers Merbein site in the Murray Darling region. Chalmers have spent years refining their approach to viticulture which includes heavy use of organic carbon (like compost) to improve soil and increase water holding capacity. All nutrients and the majority of fungicide applications utilized are organic. Residual herbicides are not part of the Chalmers regime as soil microbial health is paramount. Mulch and weed control trials are currently underway to permanently remove the need for chemical knock-down herbicide use.

Winemaking - whole bunches pressed to tank for fermentation by wild yeast. After 11 days the wine was chilled. The power plug to the refrigerated reefer arced while the wine was in there, so it was racked and bottled immediately before settling was completed. As it was just a bit too chunky, this wine was disgorged, so it is not methode ancestrale. There have been no additions to this wine (preservative free), and there has been no fining or filtration.
